Finding the Balance in Using Media

Welcome back to Food for Thought, my mental health blog focusing on many aspects of mental health including how important knowledge of this topic is along with exercise that I discussed in my first blog Healthy Mind and Body I have also discussed the impact social media has on the stigmatization of mental illness and how social media can help promote good mental health and mindfulness if you weed out the bad accounts in my other blog The Good the Bad and Social Media. Check out either of these blogs to gain a better understanding of mental health in today’s society.

Continuing on the topic of media from my last post, there are always going to be concerned about copyright or the ownership of someone’s ideas and fair use of different people’s ideas, media and anything else that is posted on the internet. Although it may be flattering to have someone want to use your work, it can be unfair and may lead to your point being taken the wrong way. In his ted talk, The Laws that Choke Creativity, Lawrence Lessig discusses laws that have been put in place to attempt to stop people from using another person’s work to be morphed into something else and the impact these have on later generations or creators.

Lessig makes a good point at the very end of his talk discussing how culture has changed and the way many people use their creativity is by creating new ideas and “remixing” other’s media to create something new. Hearing this I would want my work to be open to others to build on and provide more insight or understanding so more people can learn about mental health through multiple perspectives. You never know who will help take your work to the next level and spread the media or knowledge you have.

Learning more about copyright and fair use has provided me a better understanding as to why we regulate the use of media. For myself, I will definitely ensure I do have the right to use information when posting on this blog or other social media platforms I am using so I am not taking advantage of others. I hope those who do gain insight from my social media and want to use my information do it in a way that is ethical so more people can learn from many points of view the right way.

Social Media Campaign

To continue to encourage mental health education, destigmatization of mental illness and providing insight into exercise’s effect on mental health I have created a few social media accounts that provide more information and content. I want these accounts to be places where people can feel safe and learn about these topics.

Disclosure

The purpose of these social media platforms is to share my understanding of these topics and encourage others to broaden their understanding. I am not a licensed mental health professional and will not be using medical terminology or copyright information unless cited. I am not looking to make a profit off this as well.
